Engineering Registration Legislation in Australia, and how it Affects the Corrosion Industry 

In recent years, legislation has been expanded and introduced in a number of Australian jurisdictions setting out regulatory requirements for professional engineering services, in some cases limiting the services which can be provided subject to registration requirements. These legislation primarily target engineering activities such as structural or electrical design, however also cross into areas of practice traditionally associated with the corrosion industry. The authors have reviewed applicable legislation and regulatory requirements in a variety of Australian jurisdictions and have summarised their applicability to practical roles within the corrosion industry. Differences in regulatory requirements between jurisdictions, as well as areas of ambiguity in their legislation have been identified. The impact of the regulatory requirements on practitioners within the corrosion industry has been considered.
